Kanye West, Rihanna & Kid Cudi - All of the lights Official Video 2011 (BANNED) Review

We deiced to do a review on hip hop heavyweights  Kanye West, Rihanna and Kid Cudi's Official 2011 Video for their new song 'All of the lights'.  This video will be hard to find online as youtube have banned it due to health reasons as it contains flashing lights and images that can effect viewers with Epilepsy.

The start of the video director by Hype Williams follows a young girl walking through a snow filled estate in one of the Ghettos of the US. This is shot in black and white to the sound of the beat played on a piano. Once the beat kicks in so does the flashing bright coloured background . This is a large contrast from the black and white slow paced start.

It then cuts to a very 80's feel collection of synchronize song lyrics, artists names and record label logos all using different fonts but the same brightly coloured flashing outlines of the words which can make you feel a bit giddy watching it. This is something I didn't think someone like Kanye West and Hype Williams would have in one of their videos as both of them often portray very powerful images in their work. This is something that belongs in a Pitbul video, not that there is anything wrong with it, it just suits his catchy style of music better.

Once the chorus is over it carries on the theme of flashing through different greens, reds and yellow lights but with Mr West rapping in front of them. The lights are not so unbearable now, and using different shots such as Kanye's shadow in front of the lights, on top of a police car and close up works well. The video was criticized earlier this week as it's believed to have copied many elements from the 2010 film ' Enter the Void'.From the intro to the film which is below does seem very true.

The second chorus is a lot less flashing lights and a lot more flashing of the skin with scantily dressed Rihanna singing in a top which has less material than a bikini . The pace of the video is not slowed down as they cut between shots in quick succession similar to the way they cut between shots in Kanye's 'Gold digger' and many other Hip Hop tracks in the past few years. The last verse is from Kid Cudi singing over the original piano cords played at the beginning slowing the track and editing down using a lot more fades than cuts. The beat then cuts back and plays out showing shot of the artists then the 80's montage of lyrics on the screen. If you haven't passed out from the amount of flashing lights Hype Williams adds a final full on full screen quick cutting lights for a full 14 seconds i only know this through checking the times and not sitting through it.

This is not a great video, and it is a shame that it started like it was going to tell a story rather than be a standard video. Another let down is the names used in the production Hype Williams and Kanye West have both been involved in great videos in the past and I think they wanted to try a new idea which hasn't worked this time.
